Honor College FAQs

What is the Honors College?

The Honors College at Texas A&M University-Texarkana is an opportunity for students to make the most of their time at the university. Through a student-driven blend of unique curricular opportunities, designated Honors courses and projects, and co-curricular activities, students are given the tools to get a broader, deeper, and more meaningful education.

Why should I join the Honors College?

Students who join the Honors College are high-performing, motivated, and self-directed; they want to make their time in college special and as valuable as possible. Students who want to be more than passive learners, who want to direct their studies, and who want to engage with their community should apply. Students who want to communicate to future employers and graduate schools that they have the skills and drive to succeed should apply.

Who can apply?

If you meet our pre-approved eligibility requirements found here, you do not need to apply, you simply have to email honors@tamut.edu to accept your place.

If you do not meet those criteria, but have a strong academic record and want to be considered, you can apply directly to the Honors College by filling out the Texas A&M University-Texarkana Honors College Application.

Will all of my classes be "Honors" classes?

Not necessarily, no. You will direct your Honors curriculum, and depending on your interests, degree plan, and schedule, it will likely be a combination of Honors sections of existing courses, stand-alone Honors courses (under an HONR prefix), courses designated for individual Honors credit, or faculty-mentored projects.

Are there extra costs associated with the Honors College?

No! There are no additional costs associated with being a member of the Honors College.

Am I required to live on-campus to be an Honors student?

No! Honors students do not need to live on campus or in Honors housing

Can online students be members of the Honors College?

Yes! The Honors College is open to all eligible students, whether they are face-to-face or online.

Can I transfer in previous Honors work from another college or university?

Yes! In many cases we can count work done in an Honors Program or College towards your Honors requirements here at A&M-Texarkana. If your college or university has a pathway agreement with our Honors College, the transferability will be spelled out there. If not, please contact the dean of the Honors College to discuss your previous work.

Can I be active in other groups, including athletics, and be in the Honors College?

Yes! Many of our students are very active members of the campus and broader community. In some cases we can find ways to combine your other extra-curricular activities with our Honors co-curricular requirements.
